1. The financial crisis: The bailout has passed. Now the question is whether it works. One indication that it might work out is that people are fighting over who gets Wachovia. A week ago, the question was how to make Wachovia disappear. That’s an important change. But clearly the last week, plus the cycle, has hurt the economic system. We will be getting gross domestic product numbers soon for the third quarter. This will be important. The global system will in many ways take its cue from how the Americans react and recover — or don’t.
