Australian troops arrived in East Timor on May 25 after an eruption of violence there, including incidents of gangs attacking cars, throwing rocks and wielding machetes in the streets of the capital, Dili. The Australian forces were able to secure the airport and evacuate foreign nationals and some refugees from the country.
Although international troops' presence in East Timor might quell the violence quickly, Australia's mission is far from over. East Timor, a country with almost no resources save a few shared natural gas deposits in the Timor Gap, has been unable to develop institutions or an infrastructure that would allow the government to function. Australia's mission is first to stop the current melee, and second to rebuild the country -- a task that will easily take years.
