The Liberian government has requested that Nigeria extradite former Liberian President Charles Taylor, who faces war-crimes charges for the role he allegedly played in neighboring Sierra Leone's 10-year civil war, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's office said March 17. Obasanjo said he will consult with the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) before responding to the request.
Liberian government officials have in the past expressed serious trepidation about asking for Taylor's extradition, because of his extensive links within West Africa. His involvement in regional conflicts from Liberia and Sierra Leone to Nigeria has been a destabilizing factor for several governments and has propelled militant groups into positions of political and economic power.
