Moroccan security forces searched April 18 for two cars full of explosives -- one in central Casablanca and another near the Muhammad V International Airport, approximately 18 miles from the city center. Police suspect Islamist militants in the country are preparing to launch suicide bomb attacks in Casablanca and/or the airport. Information about the existence of the two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) came from a suspect currently in Moroccan custody.
Casablanca has witnessed a string of suicide bombings in recent days, including two April 14 that targeted the U.S. Consulate and the Dar America cultural center. On April 10, Moroccan security forces uncovered a militant safe house in the slum area of Fida following a March 10 suicide bombing in an Internet cafe, leading three suspects to detonate themselves before they could be caught.
