Militant leaders of the Solomon Islands' Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) said July 28 that they will surrender their weapons and cooperate with the Australian-led intervention force, sent to bring order to the islands, where ethnic and criminal groups fight among themselves. However, their acquiescence is not unconditional. MEF leaders want to provide information pointing to corruption in Prime Minister Allan Kemakeza's regime.
Their proposal likely is a veiled attempt to oust Kemakeza and enable their leaders to become part of a new government. Nevertheless, the offer might prove tempting to intervention force officials as they face the MEF and its rivals, including Istabu militia leader Harold Keke.
